In their latest release, "There's No Time for Presents," Bells Beach trio The Burbs lean into a raw emotion and stripped-down intensity.

The Burbs are known for their grunge-tinged alt-pop. This time, they have dialed back distortion in favor of a haunting acoustic soundscape. This is one of their most vulnerable performances yet. This song was produced by Aaron Dobos and recorded at Sing Sing Studios. The song marks a stark yet powerful evolution in their musical journey.
We got a chance to interview The Burbs for this song, and we found a lot of unspoken tales!
Let's get started:
"There's No Time for Presents" feels incredibly personal. Was there a specific moment or story that inspired it?
A phone call with a friend.
How did the idea to use a pocketknife slicing paper as percussion come about?
We just thought it was badass so we put it in.
How do you balance vulnerability and intensity in your songwriting?
We’ve never really thought about this… we’re just trying to make tasty melodies and lovely lyrics. And even though our lyrics have sucked at times we’re always working on them to make them better but never worrying about if they’re this or that or vulnerable or poetic or whatever, we just want stuff to sound good and feel good.
How did working with producer Aaron Dobos shape the final version of this song?
Aaron guides us in the right direction and is really cool when we eat food off the console and have wrestling matches and pass out on the floor and stuff.
Was there a specific emotion or message you wanted listeners to take away?
Don’t let your ex ruin your day.
The lyrics are stark and impactful. Do you write them collaboratively or individually?
Brook does the songwriting.
What was the biggest challenge you faced creating this song?
When we ran out of Sonic Energy.
If you could describe "There's No Time for Presents" in three words, what would they be?
Song of the year.
