"You don't know me" - A heartfelt folk-rock disclosure that transforms personal trouble into inner strength.

Seann Medicina - You don't know me

Seann Medicina is a local singer and songwriter from Ottawa. He merges folk, rock, and indie genres in his music to craft a very personal sound. He takes inspiration from his world trips and life experiences and writes songs which are emotionally raw and musically polished at the same time.

His energetic guitar play and heartfelt vocals help him to explore themes of vulnerability, closeness, and gaining one's power. Medicina, with a knack for melodic minimalism and the fusion of different cultures, is making music that is increasingly intimate, genuine, and quietly potent, not only for today's audience of people all over the globe craving deeper emotional experiences through truthful in-depth storytelling and intricately arranged acoustics that showcase his unique artistic identity and point of view.

You Don't Know Me is a song that beautifully depicts the emotional turmoil of a broken relationship, and at the same time, it isa very personal journey of becoming free.

At first, the song comes out as a slow, meditative song that is made for the listener to feel the deep emotions of the story presented. In his singing, Medicina displays a very genuine and authentic voice without any visible effort that provokes a very strong impact, thus making the audience perceive the song as a real, life story rather than a performed act. Meanwhile, the music setting is kept very minimal on purpose in order to give the guitar and the very quiet strings the main charge of the dramatic tension of the song. The most impressive feature is definitely the lyrics, which very skillfully steer away from the tragic tone and instead emphasise personal development, self-awareness, and a kind of quiet, intimate strength.

We got a chance to interview seann and this is how it went:

  1. What moved you to pen the song You Don’t Know Me?

Just a longstanding feeling of not veing seen or understood by those close to me.

  2. Does the track reflect an incident from your life?

I want to say it was a dysfunctional relationship with one person but really it was a pattern I had noticed where despite my best efforts of pleasing someone, listening to their wishes, I lost myself in the mix and they actually didn't even really know me. Nor did I for that matter!

  3. Which message would you like listeners to carry with them?

I think the main lesson I learned from these experiences was that giving yourself away makes you know yourself less and you are seen less by others. Only through the reclamation of one's identity can we ever hope to been seen and understood by others.

  4. How did the piece change as you kept writing it?

Actually, it's funny you ask that! I was stuck in verse and chorus, as though repeating my same life habits and coping strategies. Then somehow I railed against it and the bridge was born, where I state my boundaries and claim who I am for myself.

  5. What does this single mean to you?

For me, it carries the meaning of finding the self and being authentic. Ironically, I make myself now fully accountable for all that befalls me in life.

  6. Who were your top musical inspirations for creating this track?

The inspiration comes in a notional way – a note is trapped under a muted string, Only when the blockages are removed can it truly sing and be heard!

  7. What are you planning to give your fans next?

More honesty, in all its forms!

  8. How do you hope listeners feel after hearing the song?

If they get any kind of self-awareness or apprecation of their true selves, then my heart would shine :)
