A deeply hypnotic electro-pop voyage to the late-night world of swagger and industrial sound.

Rachel D is an accomplished producer, DJ, and sound engineer based in Auckland. Her career has taken her through the rave era of London, recording studios of post-rock, the jazz world, and the experimental electronic scenes. Her return to New York after a long time of travelling and becoming a mother, she now works her eclectic influences into Mama’s Crib Records, making daring electronic music and supporting newcomers in the MC and producer fields.
“Powersuit” is an intense, dark, and energetic foray into electro-pop, and it is a perfect demonstration of Rachel D’s command of atmosphere and groove.

The monochrome vocal lines that are delivered in a slightly playful manner are supported by the metal-tinged synths, and together these opposing elements constitute the mesmerizing contrast. It is the incessant “Girl, you look so cute” line that is doing the gradual unfolding into a more club-ready, propulsive beat as the layers of buzzing electronics become more intense, thus casting the spell. The song’s textural richness is derived from subtle post-rock elements, while the electro-clash vocal delivery brings in a likeable edge. As the rhythm speeds up towards the end, “Powersuit” achieves total immersion—disturbing, elegant, and effortlessly cool in style. The way Rachel D does a dancefloor exchange, it becomes a slick, deadpan, groove-laden mantra of class that you cannot resist.
